Dale Steyn has been officially ruled out of the remainder of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, it has been announced.

The South African seamer had been battling to overcome a shoulder injury in time for Wednesday's make-or-break clash with India in Southampton.

But the 35-year-old has been forced to admit defeat in that fitness quest, leaving head coach Ottis Gibson's side struggling on the injury front.

South Africa have called up left-arm pace bowler Beuran Hendricks as a replacement, with Lungi Ngidi also nursing a hamstring problem - and that after Anrich Nortje was ruled out with a thumb issue before the tournament even started.

"The ICC has confirmed that the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 has approved Beuran Hendricks as a replacement player for Dale Steyn in the South Africa squad for the remainder of the tournament," read an International Cricket Council (ICC) statement.

"Bowler Steyn has suffered a second shoulder injury which has not responded to treatment and has ruled him out of bowling for the foreseeable future. His replacement Hendricks is a left-arm fast bowler.

"The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad."
