From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Lancashire strengthened their position at the top of the County Championship yesterday with a comfortable 10-wicket victory over Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. It was Lancashire's fifth championship win of the season, and owed much to a ruthless performance by Kyle Hogg, who took 11 wickets in the match.
Hampshire started yesterday's play on 163 for 5, 32 runs behind the visitors. Hogg took four wickets in the morning as Hampshire stumbled to 201 all out, leaving Lancashire with a token target which they reached without any drama.
Hogg's match figures of 11 for 59 were the best of his career. Stand-in captain Mark Chilton was understandably impressed with the 27-year-old's contribution, and attributed it to the quality of the coaching. "For Kyle to come in and bowl that well on his first Championship appearance of the season speaks volumes for the quality we have in the group," said Chilton. "But it's not just good luck. We've been working towards it for a long time."
Lancashire are the only county in Division One to win five games. Warwickshire and Durham, in third and fourth place respectively, are playing at Edgbaston. The hosts will need to bat out a draw today, having reached stumps yesterday 381 runs behind with seven wickets left after following on. Durham's teenage prospect Ben Stokes has already taken six wickets in the match.
At Taunton, two late wickets left Yorkshire 155 runs ahead with four wickets left. Somerset removed Gary Ballance and Steven Patterson in the day's penultimate over.
