Warwickshire, who began the current round with a three-point lead over their Midlands rivals, made Surrey suffer at Edgbaston, where Jim Troughton and Chris Woakes each made a second century in as many matches in a daunting total of 571, to which the New Zealand off-spinner Jeetan Patel contributed 76 off 82 balls at No 10.
Nottinghamshire established a 272-run lead over Sussex at Trent Bridge after Michael Lumb (171) and James Taylor (106 not out) both made their largest scores since joining the county during the winter.
Taylor completed his first century against First Division bowling after sharing a 188-run partnership with Lumb for the fourth wicket before Lumb was bowled by Steve Magoffin.
Middlesex are well placed to move into third place, needing only 118 to beat Durham at Chester-le-Street.
There was a century, too, for Taylor's England Lions team-mate Jonathan Bairstow, who enhanced his chances of winning back his place in the senior England side by scoring 118 against Leicestershire at Grace Road.
