Steve Magoffin, the Australian pace bowler who has been Sussex's leading wicket-taker in each of his two seasons there, began his third in a manner that promises 2014 will be a similar story. Middlesex were beaten by an innings and 127 runs at Hove, where their capitulation was complete before lunch on the final day.
Magoffin, who took eight wickets in the match, finished with 5 for 56 in the second innings, having claimed the scalp of England Test contender Sam Robson overnight.
He dismissed John Simpson, Toby Roland-Jones and James Harris in the space of nine balls as Middlesex collapsed from 89 for 2 to 122 for 9. Then Steven Finn, who slogged him for six, took another big swing and was bowled.
Batsman of the day
Daryl Mitchell is clearly not a batsman who lets his concentration slip once he has a hundred under his belt. On six of the 15 occasions he has reached three figures he has finished not out and seven times he has scored 140 or more, including a colossal 298 against Somerset in 2009.
At Southampton, the Worcestershire captain was 172 not out when he declared his side's first innings at 350 for 7 against Hampshire. However, after almost the whole of the first two days were lost to the weather, the match ended in a draw.

Stuart Meaker has his supporters as a potential addition to the England pace attack but his impressive first-innings bowling for Surrey came to nothing at The Oval, where the home side were bowled out in the second innings for 81 by Glamorgan, with Graham Wagg taking a career-best 6 for 29.
Surrey then succumbed to a 10-wicket defeat as openers Gareth Rees and Will Bragg knocked off a target of 153 to win inside 46 overs.
