Cottey's 105 was the backbone of Sussex's 237 for 4, with Richard Montgomerie (51) providing the support. However, the day belonged to Nick Knight who led the home side to their huge total, as he carried his bat to post 245 with 30 fours and a six.
Hampshire had the best of the opening day of their game against Lancashire at the Rose Bowl. Christopher Tremlett returned figures of 4 for 68 and Shaun Udal 4 for 25 as the visitors were rattled out for 183. Hampshire are 45 for 2 in reply.
Steve James smashed 235 not out as Glamorgan built up a sizeable first-innings lead over Essex in their Second Division game at Chelmsford. James hit 30 fours while at the other end Matthew Maynard made 76. Glamorgan are 505 for 6, a lead of 274.
Leaders Middlesex are almost 300 runs behind Gloucestershire after closing on 218 for 6 at Cheltenham. Gloucestershire, 367 for 6 overnight, were 494 all out, Alex Gidman falling six short of his century when bowled by Abdul Razzaq, who finished with 5 for 125.
Derbyshire were bowled out for 388 by Northamptonshire on the first day yesterday despite Andrew Gait hitting 175. Christopher Bassano added 57 while Graeme Swann was the pick of the home side's bowlers, with 6 for 126.
