Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Lancashire all-rounder Glen Chapple has been awarded a benefit year by Lancashire in 2004.

Chapple, who was called up by England last week only to be released on the morning of the third Test at Trent Bridge yesterday, made his debut for the county in 1992. "I'm looking forward to a busy season in 2004, it should be fun and I'm delighted that the committee has decided to award me a benefit," he said.

The club chairman, Jack Simmons, added: "Glen's become a solid member of the team and a dependable bowler. With the addition of his selection to the England squad on Saturday, it's made for an eventful month for him. He's thoroughly deserving of this and I hope that all our members will get behind him and give their total support in what is going to be an exciting time."

Sussex have granted the former player Keith Greenfield a testimonial year for 2004. Greenfield has represented Sussex at all levels of the game from a professional player to his current position as director of the Sussex Academy.

Khaled Mahmud was retained as the Bangladesh captain yesterday for their tour of Pakistan. Bangladesh, who lost their last Test series 2-0 in Australia last month, named a 15-man Test squad including two newcomers, the batsman Rajin Saleh and the medium-pacer Alamgir Kabir.

Bangladesh will play three Tests and five one-day internationals, with the opening Test beginning on 20 August in Karachi.
