Hoggard is on international duty, while Vaughan faces a lengthy lay-off after another operation on his knee. Bresnan returns to the side after his spell with the England one-day team. Mitch Claydon and Joe Sayers have also been named in a 12-man squad.
Yorkshire have qualified for the Twenty20 Cup quarter-finals and will hope that momentum can bring them their first four-day victory of the season. They will face a Durham side able to welcome back their captain, Dale Benkenstein, after he missed the last two matches with a knee injury.
The wicketkeeper Phil Mustard missed the club's last match against Leicestershire to be with his partner as she gave birth to their first child, but he will be back to face Yorkshire.
The opening batsman Jon Lewis and bowler Ottis Gibson return after being rested for the Twenty20 Cup but Stephen Harmison, Liam Plunkett and Paul Collingwood are on international duty with England.
Second-bottom Middlesex have fared little better than Yorkshire and they welcome back Ed Joyce against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. Joyce returns to the side after an ankle injury suffered with England.
However, Ben Hutton is ruled out with shingles, so New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris will captain the side. Hutton will instead make an appearance for the Second XI this week alongside Mel Betts, who is returning from injury.
The pace bowler Alan Richardson is expected to be out for another three weeks because of continued swelling in his elbow.
