Your support makes all the difference.South-East Division leaders Kent came out on top against Surrey in a run-feast in their Friends Provident Trophy match at Canterbury yesterday. The hosts piled up 337 for 3 in their 50 overs as Darren Stevens smashed 119 not out off 77 balls, hitting four sixes and 10 fours, with Martin van Jaarsveld's unbeaten 113 off 108 – which included 10 fours – somewhat overshadowed.
The Surrey captain, Mark Butcher, led the charge with 139 off 121 balls, hitting a six and 16 fours, sharing 126 for the third wicket with Usman Afzaal (74). Ally Brown chipped in with 38 but the visitors ran out of steam and were eventually dismissed for 320 with two balls remaining.
Jason Gallian hit an unbeaten 111 and Ravi Bopara smashed 85 off 72 balls – including four sixes and eight fours – as Essex beat Middlesex by eight wickets. The pair shared an unbroken third-wicket stand of 153 – after Varun Chopra made 50 – as the hosts won with seven overs to spare. Earlier Eoin Morgan cracked 100 off 111 balls, hitting six sixes and five fours, and Ed Smith (75) as the visitors made 259 for seven.
In the South-West Division, Hampshire beat Glamorgan by four wickets after successfully chasing down the hosts' 229 for 5. The result was harsh on Mike Powell, who hit an undefeated 114 – his first limited-overs century after a decade of trying.
The Somerset captain, Justin Langer, made 117 off 131 balls and Ian Blackwell 53 off 63 as the hosts posted 278 for 9, which proved more than enough to beat Worcestershire at Taunton by 84 runs.
In the North Division, Yorkshire moved into second place with a seven-wicket win over Scotland, Craig White top scoring with 69 not out, while Durham edged out leaders Lancashire by six runs.
