From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

England head to Bangladesh next month for a two-Test tour, apparently confident of achieving success without the services of their captain, Andrew Strauss. If they think they are in for easy wickets and runs, however, they need to think again, to judge by events here in Chittagong over the past five days.

India, the best Test team in the world according to the ICC's slightly confusing rankings, were pushed, if not quite all the way then a large proportion of it, by Bangladesh in the first Test before securing a 113-run victory.

The India leg-spinner Amit Mishra grabbed four second-session wickets but not before the Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim made 101, his maiden Test century. Mishra had him caught by substitute fielder Pragyan Ojha at long-off to be the last man out as the hosts were all out for 301.

Bangladesh resumed the final day on 67 for 2 chasing an unlikely 415 for victory but they were reduced to 136 for 5 at lunch after Virender Sehwag dismissed Tamim Iqbal for 52 and Ishant Sharma claimed the wickets of Mohammad Ashraful and Raqibul Hassan. India can wrap up a series win in the the second and final Test which begins in Dhaka on Sunday.
