Australia, who lead the series 1-0, opted for Mitchell Starc in place of the slow left-armer Michael Beer and Ryan Harris returned in place of the injured James Pattinson. West Indies brought in Ravi Rampaul for the injured pace bowler Fidel Edwards and selected just one frontline spinner, Shane Shillingford – the first Dominican to play a Test on home soil.
Ed Cowan was the first Australian batsman to fall, lbw to Rampaul for 1. David Warner, with 28 not out, and Shane Watson with 30 not out saw the tourists through to the interval.
