From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The dismissal shortly after tea of Andrew Symonds threw the momentum of this intriguing third Test back to the West Indies who had started the day terrifically before Australia fought back in the afternoon session here in Barbados yesterday.
Australia had fallen to 111 for 5 just after lunch after trying to force the pace but Symonds and the wicketkeeper Brad Haddin shared an 87-run partnership. However, the dismissals of Haddin (32) and Symonds (52) left Australia struggling on 226 for 7 when the heavens opened during the final session bringing play to an early end.
Australia lost four wickets in the opening session with Jerome Taylor and Dwayne Bravo claiming two apiece. Phil Jaques was the first to go before the captain Ricky Ponting became Taylor's second victim when he was trapped lbw. Bravo then struck twice in the final over of the session, claiming the wickets of Michael Hussey and then Michael Clarke for a duck. Fidel Edwards struck after lunch to end Simon Katich's battling 36.
Symonds benefited from two slices of luck: he was dropped by Xavier Marshall at second slip and was given not out when a clear leg-side edge carried to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin but was undetected by umpire Mark Benson.
