Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Nottinghamshire mathematically assured themselves of promotion to the County Championship First Division after securing the bonus point they needed yesterday.

They went into their match at Somerset 22 points ahead of third-placed Middlesex and when Andre Adams removed James Hildreth to reduce the hosts to 84 for 3 in reply to Nottinghamshire's 158 all out, they could no longer be caught by their rivals.

There was some good news for Somerset, whose captain Justin Langer has agreed to stay with the county for another year on their return to the First Division. The former Australia batsman has guided the club to the Second Division and NatWest Pro40 titles. Langer's countryman Cameron White will leave at the end of the season.

Somerset's director of cricket, Brian Rose, said: "I am delighted to say I have shaken hands with Justin over a contract for next season and he will be continuing as captain.

"It was a difficult choice with the new ruling about only one overseas player because Cameron White has also done tremendous things for us. But his immediate future looks to be with Australia."
