West Indies win by 10 wickets
PAKISTAN needed all the breaks they could get to retrieve a forlorn situation on the fourth day of the second Test here yesterday. Instead they were set back by an obvious umpiring error and the West Indies proceeded to a 10-wicket win.
Pakistan's overnight pair, Asif Mujtaba and Moin Khan, had defied the bowling for an hour and 20 minutes. Mujtaba was struck on the full by a ball from Winston Benjamin, delivered from round the wicket, that was clearly missing leg stump. Benjamin scarcely supported appeals by the wicketkeeper and slip and seemed dumbfounded when the umpire, Lloyd Barker, raised his finger. The TV replay showed all three stumps in front of the batsman, indicating the ball would have missed even another set of stumps.
Barker, a Barbadian umpire in his 18th Test, is remembered for the 1990 controversy over his decision against England's Robert Bailey that led to his successful legal suit against the then BBC Cricket Correspondent, Christopher Martin-Jenkins. It was a cruel blow to the Pakistanis and only spirited hitting by Waqar Younis, Ata-Ur-Rehman and Aamir Nazir enabled them to avoid an inning's defeat.
They were all out at tea for 262, leaving the West Indies requiring 29 to complete their 12th consecutive Test win at Kensington Oval and secure the three-Test series, 2-0.
Moin had been in for just over an hour and a half when, playing back to an off-break from Carl Hooper that bounced, he was adjudged caught by Junior Murray by the English umpire, Dickie Bird. Moin stood his ground before eventually heading for the pavilion and a possible meeting with the match referee, Raman Subba Row.
The West Indies were handicapped by the absence of Ian Bishop. He was thought to have suffered a recurrence of the stress fracture of the vertebrae that had kept him out of cricket for more than a year and a half until his return last October. However, X-rays put those fears to rest, confirming the problem this time as muscular. It will most likely eliminate Bishop from the third Test in Antigua starting on Saturday but should not prevent him rejoining Derbyshire next week.
