Waugh slogs Australia to victory
Australia clinched a 23-run victory over the West Indies in the second one-day international in Port of Spain, Trinidad yesterday. After setting a victory target of 260 for eight, they bowled out the hosts for 234 in 47.5 overs to level the five-match series at 1-1. Quick-fire knocks of 51 from Ian Healy and 58 from Steve Waugh helped Australia finish their innings with a flourish. West Indies looked to be cruising at 175 for three in the 35th over, but a middle order collapse gifted the Aussies victory. They lost four wickets for 16 runs with pacemen Paul Reiffel claiming three for 32 from 10 overs and Craig McDermott taking three for 37 in 6.5 - the last seven wickets tumbling for 59. The South African idol Barry Richards scored a brilliant century yesterday to steer his side to a four-wicket win over England in the third-place play-off of the Masters Cup in Bombay. The Independent on Sunday's cricket correspondent, Derek Pringle, scored a rapid 64 in England's ultimately inadequate total of 247. India take on the West Indies in the final today.
