From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

WASIM AKRAM became the leading wicket-taker in one-day international cricket when he added three more victims to his tally as Pakistan wrapped up a 4-1 series victory over Sri Lanka with a 27- run win in Colombo yesterday.

In a morale-boosting performance before the start of the third Test in Kandy tomorrow, Pakistan's bowlers proved too strong for Sri Lanka, who were all out for 160 in the 49th over. Earlier, though, Pakistan had appeared none too impressive as they were dimissed for 187 in 49.5 overs after being put in.

In spite of a fine half-century from the opener Roshan Mahanama, the home side lost their last six wickets for 21 runs after failing to counter the pace of Wasim and Waqar Younis, who finished with three wickets apiece. it was Younis who received the man of the match award after he had triggered a middle-order collapse with three wickets in 10 balls.

Wasim, meanwhile, ended the match when he had Sri Lanka's Pramodya Wickramasinghe caught behind off the first ball of the 49th over. He had captured the world record when removing Sanath Jayasuriya leg before for a duck with his fourth ball.

The 28-year-old left-arm fast bowler overtook the Indian all- rounder Kapil Dev's one-day haul of 251 wickets to finish the day with 254 wickets from a total of 174 matches. Kapil achieved his feat in 220 matches. However, the record of Wasim, who made his one-day debut against New Zealand in 1985, may be short-lived since Kapil will be participating in a four-nation limited-overs' tournament in Colombo next month.
