Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

WAQAR YOUNIS picked up five wickets to destroy South Africa's batting and take Pakistan to a 10-run win in the opening match of the 10-game triangular one-day Total International Series in Durban yesterday. Waqar, regarded as the world's leading fast bowler, finished with 5 for 25 and precipitated a South African collapse in the last 10 overs.

Chasing 208 for 6, South Africa looked to be in control after 40 of their 50 overs with 159 on the board and eight wickets in hand. Waqar then struck, bowling the opener Andrew Hudson for 93 and Daryl Cullinan for a duck two balls later.

Hudson was the top scorer in the match but, with Kepler Wessels and Peter Kirsten already back in the pavilion, panic set in and Jonty Rhodes, Brian McMillan and Dave Richardson threw away their wickets by being run out.

South Africa had put Pakistan in on a damp pitch and Allan Donald, South Africa's main contribution to the array of fast bowling talent on display in a series which also includes the West Indies, dismissed Saeed Anwar in the first over before he had scored.

Pakistan quickly settled down, though, Imzamam-ul-Haq scoring 47 before being run out and Asif Mujtaba making an unbeaten 49.

TOTAL INTERNATIONAL SERIES (Durban): Pakistan 208 for 6. South Africa 198 (A C Hudson 93; Waqar Younis 5-25). Pakistan win by 10 runs.
