From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

THE AUSTRALIAN captain, Mark Taylor, missed out on beating Graham Gooch's record aggregate Test total when he was out for 92 on the final day of the second Test against Pakistan here yesterday.

Taylor scored an unbeaten 334 in the first innings, taking his total for the match to 436 - 32 behind the aggregate of 456 in a Test by Gooch against India at Lord's in 1990.

Taylor was bowled by the Pakistan captain, Aamir Sohail, just as he appeared destined for a second glorious century of the match. The Australian skipper hit 11 fours in his innings of 218 minutes. His first innings equalled the highest individual score by an Australian, made by Don Bradman against England at Leeds in 1930.

The match fizzled out into a tame draw yesterday as Australia, with a lead of 19 runs on the first innings after Pakistan had declared on Sunday at 580 for 9, batted all day before the two captains agreed to a draw with the visitors' second innings score on 289 for 5. Once Taylor was out, the interest in the game died quickly. Mark Waugh was bowled by Shoaib Akhtar for 43 and Ricky Ponting went lbw for the same score.

Aamir, the Pakistan captain, said: "We made a respectable reply to Australia and I am glad that our batsmen Ijaz Ahmed and Inzamam -ul-Haq got amongst the runs. Saeed Anwar was brilliant," he said. "The final Test is vital, we have got to bowl well and bat well to try to level the series." The third and last Test starts at Karachi on 22 October.

Meanwhile, the Australian batsman Mark Waugh has denied unsourced claims that he had been involved in match-fixing and illegal betting on games. The Australian media reported on Monday that the Pakistan Cricket Board has on its files a letter alleging links between Waugh, the former Australia batsman Dean Jones and an unidentified bookmaker. The reports said the letter, described as confidential and from Australia, was being investigated by PCB legal advisers.

"I've never had a bet on a cricket match in my life," Waugh was quoted as saying. "I've never been involved in match-fixing at any time in my life."
