Cricket: Sweeping swing to Pakistan
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

WHEN Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis suddenly began to make the ball swing in mid-afternoon they changed the whole complexion of this third Test match. New Zealand who had passed 100 for the loss of one wicket, collapsed to 157 for 6 at tea. They were all out for 200 in reply to Pakistan's 344, which had been anchored around an innings of 103 from Basit Ali, who was dropped three times in the course of it. At the close of the second day Pakistan were 8 for 2 in their second innings, 152 ahead.
If any tampering was suspected as a cause of the movement, it has to be said that the umpires, Steve Dunne of New Zealand and K T Francis of Sri Lanka, inspected the ball at the end of every over. And it is well known that the Pakistanis are pass masters at making the old ball swing and in producing reverse swing.
There is no doubt too, that they were becoming increasingly frustrated by the second wicket stand of 97 between Bryan Young and Andrew Jones.
New Zealand's first innings
revolved round a fine piece of batting by Jones who is playing his last Test before retirement. Some glorious strokes took him to 50 in an hour, but after lunch he lost much of the strike and could only watch while Waqar went through the batting at the other end.
Eventually, he ran himself out calling for a needless single to mid- on when 19 short of his 100. Waqar finished with 6 for 78 and his fierce spell in mid-afternoon ensured Pakistan of what will surely be a decisive first innings lead.
(Second day: New Zealand won toss)
(Overnight: Pakistan 334 for 7)
