Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Australian opener Matthew Hayden (90no) and Jason Laney (67no) led the Hampshire recovery on the second day of their Championship match after facing the daunting task of making 420 to avoid the follow-on against Lancashire at Southampton yesterday.
Lancashire, resuming on 423 for 5, amassed 569 for 8 before their captain, Mike Watkinson, called a halt to the carnage. Watkinson himself finished with 135, but then Hayden and Laney put together an unbroken opening stand of 171 before bad light and then rain ended play prematurely. Hayden in the process became the second player to pass 1,000 runs for the season.
Mark Alleyne led Gloucestershire to a massive lead of 385 over Durham at Cheltenham College. The home captain hit 32 boundaries in 169 off 203 balls, while Jack Russell made an unbeaten 103. Durham were all out for 86 on the first day.
Leicestershire opener Darren Maddy furthered his claims for a place on the England A tour this winter with another high-class innings against Nottinghamshire on a rain-interrupted day at Grace Road. Maddy ended on 75 not out with Leicestershire at 143 for 3, 199 behind.
