England, after winning the toss, were bowled out for 194 with eight balls left unused - and they reached that mediocre total thanks only to a superb 105 not out from the Kent opener, Robert Key. The tourists had been reduced to 145 for 8, but the pace bowler Richard Logan helped Key add 46 in just under 10 overs.
A total of 194 was never likely to be enough - and so it proved, despite excellent off-spin bowling from Jonathan Powell, who took 3 for 24, and Graeme Swann, who took 1 for 29.
