Cricket: India survive the onslaught
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

WITH nothing but survival in mind, India's new-look opening pair of Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar managed to come through seven hostile overs from the South Africa fast bowlers on the second day of the fourth Test in Cape Town yesterday.
Left to face a difficult last half hour, the 21-year-old Jadeja had agreed to bat despite an injury to the webbing of his left hand, while the all-rounder Prabhakar was forced into opening because of injuries to the regulars, Ravi Shastri and Woorkeri Raman.
Intent on defending a 1-0 lead, South Africa's highest score of the series revolved around an attractive 86 from the 23-year-old Jonty Rhodes and a dour 52 by Brian McMillan.
Rhodes, who made 91 in the second Test in Johannesburg, had added 25 to his overnight 61 when he was caught at the wicket off the seamer Javagal Srinath five minutes before lunch.
Meanwhile, McMillan, on his home pitch, made the second slowest half-century for South Africa. This took 260 minutes, surpassing Bruce Mitchell's 50 in 253 minutes against England at Port Elizabeth over 40 years ago, but falling short of Jackie McGlew's 313-minute effort against Australia in 1957.
McMillan was finally out having spent nearly five hours at the crease when caught at silly point off the leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who was India's most successful bowler with 3 for 101 in 47 overs.
