Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

MICHAEL GOUGH batted for four-and-three-quarter hours to make 62 on his debut for Durham against Essex at Chester-le-Street yesterday.

Given his chance because of injuries to three leading batsmen, the 18- year-old opener from Hartlepool showed tremendous composure during his 227-ball stay.

Although he hit only three fours, two of them off the edge, it was an invaluable innings for Durham, who were all out for 276, leaving Essex to survive one maiden over from Melvyn Betts before the close of play.

Another novice, the bowler Matthew Rawnsley, completed memorable match figures of 11 for 116 to spin Worcestershire to a 115-run victory over Oxford University at The Parks. The 21-year-old slow left-armer followed his 5 for 72 in the first innings with new career-best figures of 6 for 44 in the second.

Alun Evans scored a maiden first-class century as Glamorgan took advantage of friendly Cambridge University bowling to score 342 for 4 on a beautiful Fenner's pitch.
