Cricket: Gooch guilty of a slip-up

Your support makes all the difference.IT WAS a dreadful irony that on a day when England's spinners should have troubled the Indian batsmen one of the seam bowlers, Chris Lewis, should have been their best bowler, even if he had nothing to show for it.
He bowled a superb spell after tea when, if it had not been for some curious thinking by Graham Gooch, he would have had the wicket of Vinod Kambli. Already in this series, Kambli has shown he is vulnerable outside off stump and it was here that Lewis attacked.
Gooch, who had been in positions to save one for most of the day, now placed himself at first slip. In the last year, Gooch has missed several straightforward chances in the slips and he no longer will be looking to stand there in Test cricket. Mike Atherton, an excellent slip catcher, should have been there instead.
Lewis obliged with a beauty just outside the off stump at which Kambli flicked without any footwork. The ball flew off the edge fast but straight to Gooch at a catchable height and out it popped. After spending two more overs at first slip Gooch made way for Atherton but by then it was too late.
This match also made something of a mockery of England's wicketkeeping policy. Alec Stewart came to India as the wicketkeeping all-rounder yet in this final Test, Stewart has played as a batsman and Richard Blakey has had the gloves. This also happened in Madras, where Stewart was unexpectedly made captain and did not also want to keep wicket.
Blakey has been out of his depth as a batsman and wicketkeeper on the turning pitches and his performance has underlined the futility of not bringing Jack Russell.
