Cricket: 'Differences' over England
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.RAY ILLINGWORTH, the chairman of selectors, admitted to 'differences of opinion' after his first official meeting with the England captain, Mike Atherton, yesterday. 'There were one or two straight differences - but not disagreements. In fact, we are not a long way apart in our thinking,' Illingworth said. 'We discussed the players who went to the West Indies and the A team, who were in South Africa, and basically we seem to agree.'
Illingworth said he wanted to give Atherton the chance to use his cricketing brain with 'a properly balanced side'. 'I am not going to say to Mike, 'This is what we are doing'. It will be a matter for discussion.'
Atherton refused to take one-day specialists on the West Indies tour, but of this month's Texaco Trophy games with New Zealand, he said: 'There could be a shift of emphasis.'
The one-day squad will be chosen on 14 May.
