Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

HANSIE CRONJE capped a superb individual display with a six off the third ball of the final over to secure a six-wicket victory for South Africa in the first one-day international against India in Cape Town yesterday.

The Orange Free State all- rounder, who hit the winning runs in Adelaide in March when these teams last met in a limited-overs international during the World Cup, had earlier taken 5 for 32 with his occasional seamers.

South Africa should have strolled to victory in this day-night match after dismissing India for 184 in their 50 overs, but in the end they needed Cronje's quickfire unbeaten 12 off only five deliveries to go 1-0 up in the seven- match series.

ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL (Cape Town): India 184 (50 overs; A D Jadeja 48, W V Raman 47; W J Cronje 5-32); South Africa 185 for 4 (49.3 overs; P N Kirsten 56, * K C Wessels 43). South Africa won by 6 wickets.

Transvaal, whose captain is the Test opener Jimmy Cook, have received a suspended pounds 1,100 fine after being found guilty of ball-tampering by the United Cricket Board of South Africa. The quarter seam of the ball had been lifted to gain more movement during a domestic first-class match against Eastern Province last month. No individual could be identified with the incident.
