The Orange Free State all- rounder, who hit the winning runs in Adelaide in March when these teams last met in a limited-overs international during the World Cup, had earlier taken 5 for 32 with his occasional seamers.
South Africa should have strolled to victory in this day-night match after dismissing India for 184 in their 50 overs, but in the end they needed Cronje's quickfire unbeaten 12 off only five deliveries to go 1-0 up in the seven- match series.
