Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

South Africa 273 West Indies 159 South Africa won by 114 runs

ANOTHER POOR peformance by West Indies at Bloemfontein yesterday left them trailing South Africa 5-1 in their seven-match series of one- day games.

It was a familiar story as the tourists, chasing 274 for victory, collapsed from 40 for 0 to 82 for 8 in the space of nine overs.

In what appeared an effort to prolong the match for a big crowd on his home ground, South Africa's captain, Hansie Cronje, used an assortment of occasional bowlers at the death, allowing the last two wickets to add 77.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Junior Murray had given their side their best start of the series, reaching 40 in the ninth over, but once Shaun Pollock had Chanderpaul caught by Mark Boucher for 19, the innings collapsed tamely.

Victor Mpitsang became, at 18 years and 314 days, the youngest player to represent South Africa in an international match.

Earlier Cronje scored his 33rd half-century in his 151st one-day international, hitting 82 from 79 balls, including three sixes and six foursto revive his side's innings.
