Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

THE four-day game became the two-day at Stockton when Lancashire won by 10 wickets. After Lancashire had been bowled out for 202 - a lead of 43 - Glen Chapple took a career-best 6 for 48 as Durham were dismissed for 111.

Replying, Mike Atherton's unbeaten 39 took his Championship average to above 20.

Lord's is likely to see a three-day game as Gloucestershire need 252 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Middlesex declared at their overnight 513 for 7 and immediately set about the visitors. John Emburey took three wickets and only an eighth-wicket partnership of 72 between Ricardo Williams and Martyn Ball delayed Middlesex. Gloucestershire were eventually all out for 199.

When Emburey dismissed Dean Hodgson in the second innings it was his 1,500th first- class wicket.

Carl Hooper's 121 not out was his fifth Championship hundred of the season as Kent dominated at Canterbury. Somerset added just 20 to their overnight 88 for 1 as Tim Wren took 6 for 48 and Kent ended the day on 293 for 3.
