From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.THE WARWICKSHIRE batsman Ian Bell made a priceless century to keep England Under-19 afloat on the first day of the final Test against New Zealand.
The 16-year-old Bell was the lone batting success for the tourists as most of his team-mates failed to make the most of an excellent pitch. England only need to draw the match to win the series 1-0, and they were delighted when Michael Gough won the toss and elected to bat. But they lost early wickets and it was only Bell that kept the Kiwis at bay.
Gough misread a slower ball from Mark Gillespie and was bowled for 10. His opening partner Ian Flanagan went for 17, but Bell was in top form. Unbeaten on 35 at lunch, he came out blazing after the interval, laying into Gillespie, who went for 24 from two overs.
Bell brought up his hundred with an on-drive off Ben Jansen but was out for 115 when he charged the spinner Bruce Martin and was stumped. He was sixth out with the score 218 and Marc Symington and Joe Tucker kept things going.
