Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

EARNING a small part of his estimated salary of pounds 30,000, Mohammad Azharrudin proved his worth to Derbyshire, both as a batsman and stand-in captain at Hampshire yesterday. During his whirlwind unbeaten 71 off 57 balls he hit five sixes, three of which went out the ground.

With good support from Tim O'Gorman (46 not out) he eased Debyshire home with two balls to spare in a game reduced to 39.5 overs because of an umpire's counting error.

In Hampshire's 174 for 8, Robin Smith scored 64 as the wicketkeeper Karl Krikken took six catches, one short of the Sunday League record, held by the former Derbyshire wicketkeeper, Bob Taylor.

Durham scrambled home with two balls to spare in a hail-reduced match at Stockton. Chasing Essex's 158 off 35 overs Durham required four off the last over. After three runs from Chris Scott, Jon Longley needed three more

deliveries to score the winning runs off Mike Kasprowicz.

Ottis Gibson struck a six off Northamptonshire's Curtly Ambrose to win the game for the title-holders, Glamorgan.
