Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

For three and a half days, England outplayed the West Indies and fought their way back into a series many had thought was irretrievably lost. The tour, it seemed, was back on the right track. Then in 80 astonishing minutes, it all went horribly wrong. . .

4.04 pm: Mike Atherton pinned in front of stumps by Ambrose first ball of innings. Score: 0-1

4.09 pm: Four balls later, Mark Ramprakash turns quickly for second run, hesitates and is run out by a clear 10 yards. 1-2

4.17 pm: Robin Smith's stumps shattered as he misses with forward defensive prod against Ambrose. 5-3

4.36 pm: Graeme Hick, after 13 nervous balls, waves his bat outside off stump at Ambrose and is caught behind. 21-4

4.48 pm: Alec Stewart, moving neither forwards nor back, is spectacularly bowled by Ambrose. 26-5

4.56 pm: Ian Salisbury, the night- watchman, fends off Walsh to Lara at first slip. 27-6

5.13 pm: Jack Russell, having been hit by a short Ambrose delivery, backs away from the next and edges it to Simmons at slip. 37-7

5.23 pm: Graham Thorpe loses his off stump to Ambrose. 40-8

80 minutes. 89 balls.
