The vultures had gathered at Parkhead to see how Tommy Burns' side would react to the stinging Old Firm defeat, yet the answer was supplied in a display of rare resilience and plentiful scoring.
Goals from Paolo Di Canio, Pierre van Hooijdonk, Jorge Cadete, who scored two, and lastly Morten Wieghorst exorcised the demons of the derby disappointment. That applied some much-needed balm to soothe the painful wounds of the last few days.
The greatest of all of these had been the denial of a legitimate Cadete goal at Ibrox, which would have rescued a draw, and Celtic this time rightly found themselves on the side of justice when they went ahead after 26 minutes.
Van Hooijdonk was hauled down by his fellow Dutchman, Motherwell defender Mitchell van der Gaag, as he sought to reach Di Canio's free-kick and the Italian took the penalty with customary coolness to set Celtic's rampant victory on its course.
Van Hooijdonk then claimed his 13th goal of the season, five minutes before half-time, when he rose at the back post to powerfully head home a precise cross from Di Canio.
Motherwell had beaten Celtic seven weeks ago but there was little hint of such an upset here and their own implosion in the final 15 minutes certainly wrecked that notion. Three goals were conceded to leave manager Alex McLeish seething with anger.
Firstly, Cadete made it 3-0 when he finished off a delightful move involving Jackie McNamara and Di Canio with a stealthy shot at the near post. Then Cadete scored his second in the 86th minute, swapping passes with Van Hooijdonk before scoring, and finally Wieghorst completed the rout 60 seconds later when the Dane, who had come on as a substitute, rifled in a pass from fellow replacement Simon Donnelly.
