Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

When race-meetings are called off, the idle hands of punters get into all sorts of mischief and yesterday they were occupied writing out ante-post bets on Master Oats for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The winner of Saturday's Welsh National and already favourite for the Aintree version, he was backed down to 8-1 from 16-1 with Ladbrokes for Cheltenham. William Hill have cut him to the same odds, while Coral go 10-1.

That puts Master Oats in second spot behind Barton Bank in most lists, even though his trainer, Kim Bailey, has stressed the necessity of very soft ground.

Two of Master Oats's likely Gold Cup rivals, Jodami and Monsieur Le Cure, are likely meet when they use the same stepping to Prestbury Park, the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock on 21 January 21.

John Edwards, trainer of the King George VI Chase runner-up Monsieur le Cure, said yesterday: "I have been very pleased with him since Kempton. Haydock is the next opportunity for him."

Two former Gold Cup winners, Cool Ground and Garrison Savannah, are among an 18-strong entry for the Anthony Mildmay, Peter Cazalet Handicap Chase at Sandown on Saturday. Dubacilla, a Gold Cup aspirant this year, and Antonin are likely to be among their rivals.
