BRITISH SYNDICATE WELSH DRAGON FIRST TO ENTER ROUND THE WORLD RACE

Welsh Dragon has become the first British syndicate to register for the 1997-98 Whitbread Round the World Race. One of 22 to pay the £10,000 fee, the race director, Ian Bailey-Willmot, said he was confident the syndicate, backed by, among others, Cardiff Bay Development Association, AXA Insurance and Ove Arup, would raise the required money.
A high pressure system s over Cape Horn has brought very light winds to the BOC single handed round the world fleet making its way from Sydney to Punta del Este, Uruguay. But at the front of Class One Christophe Augin recorded another 300-mile overnight run to extend his lead over Jean-Luc van den Heede to 451 miles.
