Britain won their first medal at the World Games in Fukuoka, Japan yesterday - a swimming bronze in the women's 4x200m freestyle, courtesy of Helen Billington, Helen Jepson, Lucy Findlay and Joanne Deakins. The British football team's 4-2 victory over Brazil, a win they needed to stay in the competition, was marred by David Norman suffering a broken leg.

WORLD STUDENT GAMES (Fukuoka, Japan) First day (winners and GB): MEN: Swimming: 200m breaststroke final: 1 A Tkatchev (Rus) 2min 14.69sec. Judo finals: Under 95-kg: I Stepkine (Rus) bt A Uladimir Sanchez (Cuba) by ippon. Over 95-kg: Y Makishi (Jap) bt M Milinkovic (Yug) by ippon. Gymnastics: Team final: 1 Japan 169.975pts.

WOMEN: Swimming: 100m butterfly final: 1 Liu Limin (China) 59.74sec. 800m freestyle: 1 T Kihara (Japan) 8:40.68. 400m individual medley final: 1 F Kurotori (Japan) 4:45.66. Under 72-kg: S Yoshida (Japan) bt L Castellanos (Cuba) by yuko. Over 72-kg: G Beltran (Cuba) bt M Kolodziejczyk (Pol) by hantei.
