Your support makes all the difference.Former Olympic gold medallist Luke Campbell has agreed terms to fight unified lightweight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko in the United Kingdom on 31 August.
The championship bout, which will be for Lomachenko’s WBO and WBA world titles as well as the vacant WBC belt, will take place at London’s O2 Arena and sees the 31-year-old Campbell step up for what will undoubtedly be the biggest fight of his career.
Lomachenko has only competed in 14 professional bouts, but has already held world titles at three different weights and is looking to unify the division by adding the WBC and IBF championships to his collection – Ghanaian boxer Richard Commey currently holds the latter.
The fight has been sanctioned by the WBC, ensuring that a planned purse bid for Wednesday has been cancelled, and it is set to be supported by another world championship fight between WBC flyweight champion Charlie Edwards and Julio Cesar Martinez.
It’s also been confirmed that the fight will be shown on Sky Sports in Britain and Ireland, and on ESPN in the US, though it is likely to be taken to Box Office as fans clamour to see Lomachenko’s UK debut.
Like Campbell, 31-year-old Lomachenko is also a former Olympic champion, but won two gold medals at featherweight in 2008 and lightweight four years later.
In total, Lomachenko claims to have fought 396 times as an amateur, suffering just one defeat before turning professional and winning world titles at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight to place him among the very best pound-for-pound boxers.
Campbell meanwhile lost his only world title fight in a split-points decision against Jorge Linares in 2017 – the man who Lomachenko went on to beat in May 2018 to claim the WBA title.
Lomachenko has since defeated Jose Pedraza and Anthony Crolla, while Campbell’s record reads two defeats from 22 bouts after recording three consecutive victories since losing out to Linares.
