Jones, a Florida-born cruiserweight who recently became a naturalised Russian citizen, defeated Vyron Phillips at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona.
Philips, a 33-year-old mixed martial artist who had never previously competed as a boxer, was selected from a pool of around 1,500 entrants and stood to win $100,000 if he could beat a man 14–years-older than him.
The Boxing Writers Association of America’s 1990s ‘Fighter of the Decade’ made light work of the novice, who had competition runner-up Anthony Trotter advising him in his corner.
After biding his time during the first round, Jones earned a technical knockout in the second with a counter right to the head. Phillips got up from the blow but his challenge was stopped by the referee.
Jones was returning to action for the first time since suffering a brutal knockout against Enzo Maccarinelli last December and suggested that, despite his age, he has not yet made plans to retire from the sport.
“I don’t have anything planned,” he said after the fight. “You just never know what’s going to happen.”
