Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor: Who could fight on the undercard?

Floyd Mayweather will meet Conor McGregor in the ring at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena on 26 August, in what is likely to be the highest-grossing fight of all time.

The fight has divided opinion, even though it will likely be watched by anyone with even a passing interest in either boxing or mixed martial arts, but it will not be the only draw on the night.

As part of the deal to arrange the fight, the event’s undercard will be arranged by Mayweather Promotions and every fight on the undercard will adhere to the Queensbury rules.

At the time of writing, no undercard fights have been confirmed, though speculation is mounting as to who could feature. Which candidates are realistic, which are unlikely?

Leonard Ellerbe, chief executive of Mayweather Promotions, suggested that Hartlepool-born Savannah Marshall, the 2014 Commonwealth Games middleweight champion, will make her professional debut on the undercard.

“Speaking of Savannah, she doesn't know this so I'll break this, she will make her pro debut on that card," Ellerbe told Sky Sports.

“That's breaking news. She doesn't know that and I haven't spoken to her about that, but that's the plan. She's going to make her pro debut on that card.”

Reports in the United States suggest that another fighter in Mayweather’s stable, J’Leon Love, is in line to appear on the undercard.

According to TMZ Sports, the 23-1-1 middleweight is already certain of a spot on the bill though Mayweather Promotions are yet to find an opponent.

Love hit the headlines in 2013 after testing positive for hydrochlorothiazide, a substance banned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. His win over Gabriel Rosado on the undercard of Mayweather's victory over Robert Guerrero was subsequently ruled a no contest.

Mayweather’s protégé is hot property at the moment, especially after the impressive victory over Liam Walsh last month which saw him successfully defend his IBF super featherweight title.

The McGregor fight would be an ideal platform on which to promote the 22-year-old, but Mayweather’s company is yet to offer any concrete indication that he will be on the bill.

Wilson Reis, the Brazilian mixed martial artist, called Davis out shortly after Mayweather’s agreement with McGregor was confirmed in the hope of arranging another cross-sport bout.

The likelihood of that match-up coming to pass on 26 August? Slim.

The Swedish WBC super middleweight title holder has already played his part in one of the fights of the year after his tightly-contested draw with James DeGale in January.

As the biggest name in the Mayweather Promotions stable, it would certainly make sense for Jack’s name to be on the poster for the company’s biggest-ever promotion.

The question is, now he has seemingly moved up to light heavyweight, who would he fight? Nathan Cleverly, the Welshman who currently holds a version of the WBA’s title in the 175lbs category.

The golden boy of British boxing has previously joked that he would like a place on the fight’s undercard, telling Mayweather at a meet and greet in May that a fight with McGregor would be “legendary s***, that fight will go [down] in history.”

Is there any real chance of Joshua making an appearance? Almost certainly not.

Joshua’s next fight is likely to be a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko after their thrilling Wembley meeting in April and that itself is extremely unlikely to happen before the autumn.
