It's the one punch that defined Carl Froch's career. On the day that he announced his retirement from professional boxing, 'The Cobra' admitted that his career has run long enough and accepted he may not be able to repeat the fireworks that ended his thrilling battle with George Groves last year.

Having seen a highly controversial ending to their 2013 showdown go in Froch’s favour when the fight was stopped somehwat prematurely, the rematch was pencilled in for 31 May at Wembley Stadium in a fight of the scale that Britian has never seen before.

Froch cut a more composed figure heading into the fight, having admitted that in the build-up to Froch v Groves I he let the young Briton get under his skin which left him horribly exposed to the first-round knockdown that stunned the boxing world and beyond.

However, Froch v Groves would see no repeat of that, and with Froch on the front foot for most of the bout, he struck in round eight with a beautiful right-hander that ended the fight and left no doubt who had won the six-month duel between the pair.

However, the Groves rematch was not Froch’s best finish of his career by a long way. In April 2009, Froch suffered the first knockdown of his career when American Jermain Taylor put him on the canvas in the third round. Froch rallied, but went into the 12th needing stoppage to prevent defeat in his first defence of his WBC super middleweight title. What came next was a dramatic finale that saw the referee stop the fight with just 14 seconds remaining until the final bell.

Watch the final round of Froch v Taylor below:

While Froch vacates the super middleweight division, Groves has the chance to get his hands on the world title he desires when he takes on WBC world champion Badou Jack in Las Vegas in either August or September.
