Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Britain's Pat Barrett and Derek Angol both failed to take World Boxing Organisation titles at Manchester's G-Mex Centre on Saturday night. Manning Galloway, of the United States, retained his welterweight title against Barrett with a unanimous points decision while the American Tyrone Booze knocked out Angol in the seventh round of their cruiserweight bout.
Angol, who was previously unbeaten, could not match the tactically superior Booze. Most of his punches fell only on Booze's arms and gloves. In the seventh, exhaustion caught up with him and one telling punch from Booze put him out for the count.
Barrett had no chance to unleash the punch which has given him 25 victories inside the distance - Galloway's footwork and defence were too good. When Galloway sustained a cut in the seventh Barrett could not take advantage. After the eighth, Galloway increased the pressure and his punch rate.
'The fight just slipped away,' Barrett said, 'the rounds went so fast and I still felt fresh at the end. I didn't land a clean shot all night.'
