From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Shock defeat for Susanti

Susi Susanti, of Indonesia, regarded by many as the greatest women's singles player of all time, suffered a stunning defeat in the semi- finals of the team event in the World Championships as the champions, South Korea, made a spirited defence of the Sudirman Cup, writes James Leigh from Lausanne. Susanti was beaten 3-11 11-5 11-5 by the Asian Games champion, Bang Soo-Hyun. Earlier, Indonesia had gone 2-0 up after the former All England champion Heryanto Arbi had beaten the world No 18, Kim Hak-Kyun, in the men's singles and Heryanton Trikus and Minarti Timur had won the mixed doubles against Kim Dong Moon and Gil Young-Ah. Susanti's defeat cut the lead to 2-1, but Eliza and Rosiana Zelin won the women's doubles to give Indonesia a 3-1 winning lead and eliminate South Korea.
