All the teams turned out in replica uniforms that commemorated great teams of the past, fans wallowed in nostalgia, and a mountain of kit was sold. Wouldn't it be nice, we thought, if the idea caught on over here? Shirts with proper collars, shirts with laces, big old- fashioned crests . . . then we thought again and realised where the Yanks had got the idea in the first place.
