Of the 2,000 people polled by British Gypsum, two thirds said large living spaces were their main priority, and just over half that energy efficiency was important. Only half said being close to shops or schools was a key factor.
In terms of reasons to move, issues with neighbours topped the survey, cited by two thirds of those questioned, followed closely by the need for more bedrooms. One in three admitted grown up children returning to the family was a contributing consideration, with Bristol topping the list in this category.
Property pressure
A new survey by estate agency Purplebricks.com shows that owning a property is only less stressful than pressure to achieve career success, and having a family.
Nearly a third of those surveyed said they feel pressure to buy their own home on a daily basis. Just over half said that 30 was the age when they should be on the propertyladder - two thirds said that they would feel like a failure if they had not bought a property by 31.
"As house prices have rocketed in recent years there seems to have been a shift in people’s priorities with many choosing to focus on their professional life first, so that they are in a better financial position for settling down to buy a house and have a family," said Purplebricks CEO Michael Bruce.
A manor house for £250,000

The Grade II listed former manor house which dates to the end of the 15th century does need to be totally renovated but comes with an acre of grounds, more than 5,000sqft of floor space and some outbuildings. The loft space is also large enough to be converted to add to the three floors of current accommodation.
A covenant means it must be restored to a single dwelling house rather than being divided into flats.
