Milan hosts Design in the City, architect David Chipperfield gets his first UK retrospective, and design leaders gather in Beijing for the Icograda congress. Coming up within the next four weeks: 100% Design Tokyo, the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona, and the MoMA's first Bauhaus exhibit since the 1930s.

Form Matters

October 21 - January 31

Form Matters at the London Design Museum will take a new look at architect David Chipperfield's work in his first UK retrospective, including his ten-year restoration project of the Neues Museum in Berlin, which had been significantly bombed in World War II.

Milano Design in the City

October 22-25

Conceived by DesignPartners, this new event dedicated to product design spans the whole of Milan with showroom and boutiques all across the city participating. Circuits, cultural initiatives and -- of course -- shopping will also be part of Milano Design in the City.

Icograda World Design Congress

October 24-30

Organized by Icograda, the world body for professional communication design, the congress held in Beijing will feature presentations, discussions and workshops. Highlights include the Beijing Typography Exhibition, which will focus on how to move traditional calligraphy into the digital age.

Dutch Design Week

October 17-25

For a full week, the whole region around Eindhoven (including Bergeijk and Helmond) hosts design events for the Dutch and international community in order to support the country's world-renowned designers. Award ceremonies, exhibitions, and shows take place at various locations including Strijp-S, Designhuis, and Smalle Haven.

Design events coming up in the next four weeks

Vipp design auction

October 28

For its 70th anniversary, Vipp has thought up a collaboration with some of the world's leading figures in fashion, art, and design to create one-of-a-kinds of the bin it is known for and auction them off to benefit Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA). Among the 35 participating artists are the fashion designers Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta as well as singer Yoko Ono, photographer Nigel Barker and top model Helena Christensen. Their re-looked Vipp bins will go under the hammer October 28 at the New York flagship store of design retailer Design Within Reach.

100% Design Tokyo

October 30 - November 3

Focusing on bringing contemporary design to the mainstream, 100% Design Tokyo is the Japanese equivalent of the London event started back in 1995. Close to 100,000 visitors are expected at this year's fair.

World Architecture Festival

November 4-6

The world's biggest architecture summit for professionals will this year, under the motto ‘Less Does More,' examine the "challenges facing architects in the new world economy," focusing on how innovative thinking can reduce the amount of time, energy, material and finance needed to create buildings and cities.

Memphis Blues

November 5 - December 4

After gallerist Carla Sozzani dedicated an exhibition to the Memphis design collective in Milan earlier this year, Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaïa's pays tribute to the same group at his Paris gallery this fall.

Bauhaus 1919-1933: Workshops for Modernity

November 8 - January 25

This display is the Museum of Modern Art's first major exhibition since 1938 on the subject of the influential German school of avant-garde design and architecture.
