From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Creative Room, a Vancouver-based design collective, has challenged some of the city's top architects to come up with original gingerbread solutions for the future, which are currently being auctioned off on the internet.

The submissions from the ten participating practices are not always on the serious side of things, with McFarlane Green Biggar Architecture + Design tackling the issues of "Research in Sustainable Gingerbread Technologies" or Eastside Design & Solus Decor presenting the 'Earthship Lollipop,' "the world's first LEAD (Leadership in Edible Architectural Design) Platinum residence."

Other architects replicated actual Vancouver townhouses or thought about alternative endings to 'The Gingerbread Boy.'

"We asked the entrants to do away with ubiquitous veneer of jujubes and Smarties in an effort to re-interpret the gingerbread house within a modern context. The results were outstanding," Creative Room enthused.

All houses can still be bid for through December 10 before a subsequent gala event at the Museum of Vancouver, starting at 7 pm. Tickets for the event can be bought for CA$20 (US$19) at touchlesstickets.com.

Proceeds of the auction will go to Architecture for Humanity.
