The products to buy, the places to travel, and the people to admire - now
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Wallpaper magazine, which named the cream of the design crop at its annual Design Awards January 14, apparently was in an Empire State of Mind and selected New York as the best city for 2010 as well as the Big Apple's new urban park, The High Line, as the top life enhancer of the year.
Raf Simons for men's wear and Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons) for women's wear were the big winners in fashion, while Konstantin Grcic took home the prize for best furniture designer of the year. And if you still need some travel inspiration for 2010, might we suggest the Habita MTY in Mexico (best new hotel), the Kaa in Sao Paulo (best new restaurant) or the Koncerthuset in Copenhagen (best new public house)?
A star-studded jury including Spanish film director Pedro Almodovar, US interior designer Kelly Wearstler, architect Steven Holl, Dior's creative director John Galliano, media mogul James Murdoch, and artist Carsten Höller voted on the nominees released earlier this week, but the final selection was down to the editors of Wallpaper.
"Financial meltdown set the bar a notch or two higher for 2009 and we're pleased to report that, despite the doom and gloom, output has proved second to none," the magazine stated in a release.
