Ten years of American design on show in New York
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. In its new exhibition Design USA: Contemporary Innovation, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum showcases the works of America's leading designers of all disciplines.
Constituting the accomplishments of the winners during the first ten years of the National Design Award, exhibits span architecture, landscape, interior, and product design as well as communication, graphics and fashion: everything from Tom Ford to Tupperware, as the organizers put it.
It is the first time an entire exhibition has been devoted to the award, which was launched in 2000 to promote American design.
" Design USA features objects from a pivotal moment in American design, a renaissance in which designers expanded beyond traditional boundaries as witnessed by the explosion of digital technology, material innovations and interdisciplinary collaborations," said Cara McCarty, curatorial director of the museum, adding that the exhibition demonstrates how "these developments have impacted our lives," now and in the future.
Designers include Ralph Rucci and Isabel Toledo in fashion, Aveda and Peter Walker in landscape, Antenna Design and Ned Khan in 'green' design, and Milton Glaser and Charles Harrison for their lifetime achievement, among many others.
Design USA: Contemporary Innovation will run through April 4, 2010. Tickets cost $15.
