So you want to live... in a former pump house
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

What did it pump?
Opposite a water tower, this was part of a water service station, serving the Bromley area. One of two adjacent pump houses, this one was converted in 1999 into six homes, with the aforementioned apartment put on the market a few weeks ago.
And the second pump house?
It seems Bromley canít do without its water supply, so the remaining, second structure is still fully operational, although the agents are keen to point out that there isnít a noise problem.
Many original features?
Considering the nature of its former life, it's not surprising that this smallish two-bedroom apartment is pretty plain. What is slightly bizarre then, is the agent's restorative claims, which state that "many of the building's original features have been sensitively restored". But never mind.
So what do you get?
A living room connected to a timber-clad kitchen via an archway, two upstairs bedrooms and a ground-floor shower. Lighting is one of the property's strengths - enormous, floor-to-ceiling arched windows run down one side of the living area and bedrooms.
Any funky features?
To be fair, this is aimed at young professionals, not a family of four. You do get a bit of character-enhancing exposed brickwork and steel circular beams running through the apartment. On a more useful note, its located off a cul-de-sac with ample off-street parking.
How much?
The Pump House, in Bromley, Kent, is for sale at £244,950 (Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward, 020-8460 6066).
