Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Mind your manors

THE GOSLING, Hassobury Mansion, Farnham, Hertfordshire
Price: £1.15m
Agent: Mullucks Wells
Tel: 01279 755 400

They say: A magnificently restored portion of a fine Victorian Gothic mansion set in idyllic farmland. The property comprises four bedrooms, two reception rooms as well as a grand entrance hall. The views are charming and it has garaging too.

We say: With its 16ft-high ceilings, this has stately-home overtones. But the kitchen is minute (for the staff, perhaps) and the dining room seems rather squashed on to a galleried landing, which could lead to some tricky situations after a few glasses of port. But the panelling and plaster work are wonderful.

Go with the grain

THE GRANARY, Linton, Cambridge
Price: £625,000
Agent: Carter Jonas
Tel: 01223 368 771

They say: A striking and beautifully presented converted granary laid out over three floors in a popular, picturesque location. There are four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a courtyard garden and double garage.

We say: There's also a large garden room, which would probably make the upstairs reception room redundant. You might want to countrify the paved garden a little to fit with your rural surroundings – the village has a pub, bakery and regular farmer's market.

Square deal

LONSDALE SQUARE, Islington, London N1
Price: £2.5m
Agent: Currell
Tel: 020-7226 4200

They say: Sited on the south-west corner of a highly sought-after square, this five-storey, three-bedroom, five-reception house is presented in excellent decorative order, with lovely open vista to the rear.

We say: For a house of this size, there are not enough bedrooms – though two of the five receptions could be easily become extra bedrooms, leaving the whole of the ground and lower-ground floors as living space. And there's a dumb waiter running between the kitchen and the dining room above.

Five stars

HAY HEDGE, Wells Lane, Bisley, Gloucestershire
Price: £550,000
Agent: Knight Frank
Tel: 01285 659 771

They say: Pretty stone cottage with four bedrooms, two receptions and views over the surrounding countryside.

We say: This part of the Cotswolds is a honeypot for celebrities. The fourth bedroom leads off the third, but there is a good-sized loft, which could be converted into guest rooms .

Just Georgious

CLAPTON TERRACE, Hackney, London E5
Price: £300,000
Agent: Savills
Tel: 020-7923 8650

They say: Set back from the main road, this spacious second-floor, two-bedroom flat is in one of the area's few remaining Georgian terraces.

We say: The price includes a share of the freehold, which is a bonus. But you have to go through the sitting room to get to the bathroom.

Flower power

NINEVEH HOUSE, Benenden, Kent
Price: £749,000
Agent: Knight Frank
Tel: 01892 515 035

They say: Delightful 1930s family house and garden with four bedrooms. The owners have created a fabulous 26ft triple-aspect kitchen and breakfast/living room, and despite being in woodland and fields, the property is only an hour from the capital.

We say: There's currently only one bathroom, but it does have planning permission for a large extension. Outside, the bluebell woods are gorgeous and there's a waterfall and treehouse.
