The Incheon International Design Awards (IIDA) is open to designers from around the world and rewards innovative and socially applicable green designs. Last year's winning design was a thermodynamic cooler, an environmentally friendly alternative to a refrigerator.
The Incheon International Design Awards (IIDA) is an annual design competition held in Korea, rewarding innovative and practical products. The theme of this year's Incheon international design awards (IIDA) is that of ‘green heart' or environmentally friendly designs which can benefit the way people live and work.
The competition is divided into three categories, ‘Green design for humans', ‘Green design for the city' and ‘Green design for communications'. Designs will be considered by a jury and judged on their innovation capacity and social relevance; prizes of up to $10, 000 will be awarded to the winning design.
The competition is open for the submission of designs until August 25; the results of IIDA will be announced in mid-September.
The winner of the 2009 competition, American, Rochus Jacob, created a thermodynamic cooler which used evaporating water as a means of cooling and preserving food. The thermodynamic cooler acted as a refrigerator, without releasing ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere as traditional devices do.
Two environmentally friendly fridges, the 'Bio-Robot Refigerator' designed by Yuriy Dmitriev of Russia and the 'External Refigerator' by Nicholas Hubert of France were also amongst the 8 finalists of Electrolux's design lab awards 2010.
Other household design competitions include the Consumer Electronics Association ‘I -Stage'. The winning design of the 2009 ‘I-Stage' competition was the Regen Renu solar powered iPhone charger. The Regen Renu design is now available commercially and costs $249.
Though a number of green designs such as the thermodynamic cooler or the bio-robot refrigerator are not currently for sale, the IIDA competition intends to draw attention to the application of green technology in everyday household items.
