At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Your support makes all the difference.David and Victoria Beckham have bought a home in west London for £40 million – and have decided it needs another £5 million invested in refurbishment before it can be brought up to scratch.
With the house described as a “project”, the former Spice Girl and ex-England captain are expected to move into the home when the modifications are completed towards the end of next year.
The four-storey home is reported to have seven bedrooms, five bathrooms and two rooms just for Victoria’s shoes.
There will be an underground garage to store David’s extensive fleet of cars and motorbikes, and a tunnel which staff and security will use to travel in and out from a second property.
A friend of the Beckham family told the Sun on Sunday the plans were “mind-blowing”, and said: “They have been working to a new schedule since David retired from football.
“The new place is a project – and a place for the kids, particularly Harper. It will be her memories of a childhood home when she is older. And what a childhood she is going to have.”
David, 38, and Victoria, 39, are expected to occupy the top floor, and workmen will add vast wardrobe space for the clothing designer to store her latest inventions.
The third floor will reportedly be for guests, each bedroom coming with an en-suite bathroom.
Finally, the boys Brooklyn 14, Romeo, 11, and Cruz, eight, and daughter Harper, two, will take the second floor.
Reports earlier this month suggested the family had their hearts set on a £50 million home complete with panic room a stone’s throw from Kensington Palace.
Then, a source told the Mirror: “After months of searching they have found their dream city home. Their offer should get accepted any day now.
“It is in a perfect, quiet location with discreet, well-to-do neighbours.
“David and Victoria want everything perfect. It will be unique.”
The west London purchase follows the sail of their Hertfordshire home, known as Beckingham Palace.
The 12-acre estate, bought just months after David and Victoria got married in 1999, cost £2.5 million. It reportedly sold for £12 million this autumn.
